Dune (2021) Legendary Pictures//Warner Bros. Pictures |
Admittedly, I have heard of Dune in the past and I knew a few things about it such as its reputation for being notoriously difficult to adapt its source material. Dune is considered a Sci-Fi novel classic and it's widely regarded as ahead of its time and the archetype for other Science fiction movies such as Star Wars. However, I initially wasn't interested in it and didn't care to venture further beyond the surface of the series. During the winter season of 2021 and when I had some time on my hands. I decided to revisit Dune in a deeper way. I'm glad that I did because I now see what I was missing out on.

For me, entertainment first and foremost serves as a form of escapism. I enjoy entertainment that allows for me to be immersed in a different world and the world of Dune does exactly that. The new 2021 film adaptation of Dune has come at the right time. It's a breath of fresh air in the current mainstream entertainment landscape that's relying heavily on nostalgia, CGI, and turning your brain off popcorn-munching spectacles.
Some of the things that I enjoy about Dune are its world-building, coming-of-age story, social commentary, and how thought-provoking it is. I think it strikes the perfect blend of being cerebral while also providing spectacle.
There's definitely been a resurgence of interest in the Dune series thanks in part to the recent 2021 film adaptation. I'm looking forward to Dune Part 2 in October 2023. So far, I believe the future of Dune looks bright and I wonder depending on the commercial success of the films if any more of the books beyond the first one will be adapted. Ideally, I think Dune should be a trilogy of films. The filmmakers should also adapt the second book in the series Dune Messiah.
